THE REASON PEOPLE LEAVE JOBS IS NOT WHAT YOU THINK

Why do you think people leave jobs in cyber security? Why do you think you cannot hold onto staff?

You don’t need expensive consultants, or third party companies, or HR theories to tell you. Just ask them.

I asked the question and, as people can trust that I will keep the results anonymous, they were very honest. No matter what they are telling you, these are the real reasons and it is pretty shocking. It is also very, very easy to address, sort-out and overcome.

The number 1 reason people leave job is (drum roll please)…

UNPLEASANT OR BAD MANAGEMENT

That means you could be to blame. Stings a bit doesn’t it? To think that you could be the reason people are leaving your company.

So what are you going to do differently today?

  1. The number one reason makes sense. Usually, for developing security programs, security is placed under infrastructure or another business function where the leader has no clue about security, but want to reserve the decision about what is best for themselves and take the credit.
In more developed organizations the manager/leaders may know security but they lack leadership skills.
Good knowledgeable managers with the ability to coach, teach and mentor are rare. However, these manager can be developed into this with the right leaders and culture.
I would love to have a more indepth discussion about this.
